One of the most visually stunning demonstrations of talent and creativity within the architectural and engineering communities will provide a much-needed source of food for Food Finders to help eliminate hunger in the Long Beach community.

The 5th annual CANstruction® Long Beach competition benefiting Food Finders will be held in the Landmark Square Building lobby on October 11th starting at 8am. CANstruction® participants will design and build unique structures made entirely out of canned goods. The structures may be built up to 10’ x 10’ x 10’ and will be comprised of canned goods totaling over 15,000 lbs. This year’s theme is “The CAN-dy Store”, and participating teams may depict candy in any way they want. Watch the VIDEO from the 2017 Competition.

The Landmark Square Building is located at 111 West Ocean Blvd., in downtown Long Beach and is accessible 24/7 with security on site.

Teams made up from local architectural and engineering firms will transform thousands of cans of food into larger than life artistic masterpieces. The 2018 participants are:

  • P2S Engineering partnering with MHP Structural Engineers
  • Moffatt & Nichol
  • Long Beach Water Department

The completed structures will be on display to the public October 11 – 21. Visitors are encouraged to bring canned goods to the Landmark Square Building lobby to be used as “votes” for their favorite structure by placing the cans in Food Finders supplied bins next to each structure resulting in a “People’s Choice” award. Additional awards including “Structural Ingenuity”, “Best Use of Labels”, “Most Cans”, “Best Meal” and “Juror’s Favorite”, will be chosen by a panel of local judges following the exhibition.

“Food Finders is excited to be the beneficiary of the 5th annual Long Beach CANstruction,” said Patti Larson, Executive Director of Food Finders. “Last year’s event generated a 12,000 pounds of donated of canned goods, and this unique event will continue to heighten awareness of food insecurity in our community while helping us feed those in need in our own backyard.”

“Our talented teams have spent months designing their entries and are allowed only 12 hours to meticulously stack and color-coordinate their cans into ingenious feats of design,” added Terri Henry of terri henry marketing LLC, who organizes the event. “The ultimate donation of thousands of cans of food to feed the food insecure in our community makes it all worthwhile to the teams.”

CANstruction® Long Beach 2018 is sponsored by the Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Post, terri henry marketing, Full Riot Productions, Century 21 Masters, TLD Law and S&W Beans, who donated 440 cases of product for the build teams to use in their designs.
