It is officially National American Heritage Month! What does that mean you ask? It is a way for us to celebrate and acknowledge the endless amount of contributions that the many different tribes have given us. Helping to recommit to upholding the trust and treaties we have in place, and giving thanks to the influence that the native culture has provided in the advancement of our country.
Here in Long Beach, the Native Tribe who originally settled here were the Tongva people. They also are known as Gabrielinos for the Spanish missions built on their territory; they lived in Southern California for thousands of years before the earliest settlers arrived.
Recently Cal State Long Beach came to a settlement agreement to protect a 22-acre plot of land that belongs to the native people of this land. Which is a huge step in the right direction for honoring and holding to the trust and treaties we have with the tribes.

Start by educating yourself on Native history and culture, as well as research and watch the different films and documentaries there are. Visit the many museums, exhibits, and events that center around Native history and culture. Donate to a charity or organization that focuses on the preservation of Native history, and educating the public about Native culture. Feeling adventurous, try out a Native recipe! Whichever route you choose to celebrate, it is important to remember why we have a National American Heritage month in the first place…..to honor and celebrate the true pioneers of this country.
